Clarence Vanderweele (Mad scientist Vanderweele – possible relation) – Had a hand in founding Retrospec

Mahoney

Baroque – Chief of Security, found in “big, sprawling impossible library.” Clarification on phrasing would be appreciated. Also a cyborg.

jim halloway (r&d)
janet wiseman (now halloway) (hr)
maurice fitzwilliam (intern, reports to jim)

wendy guo (security) (also archivist)

nigel cavendish was the other guy we talked to
he was with research and development, but he said he wasn't involved in jim's projects

“From Spinnato, I learned the Founders fought against unreality as well. But.... from my teammates who met Vanderweele? They said he wasn't exactly keen on helping them when they brought up fighting unreality. And yet, he founded Retrospec, a group which also fights unreality. Or at least, fights what unreality it doesn't cause. Could be he simply, had a different methodology than the other 3.”

Vanderweele: Staff and Wolf.
Mahoney: Sword and Rabbit.
Spinnato: Shield and Koi.
Cavendish: Bear and Book.

Related:

Our team did manage to gather information regarding the founders. Clarence Vanderweele, Philip Spinnato, Georgia Mahoney, and Myrtle Cavendish are their names, as evidenced by what we experienced in the forest. They had, apparently, fought the "unreality" in the past -- for whatever that implies for the state of things now.

There's also Joanne, Ms. Wiseman's younger sister.

Ronnie – In charge of the subway lines, and “other paths.” Perhaps further clarification will be forthcoming? Referenced the various locations as “other spaces”, which was taken to mean other dimensions. He could be the one overseeing the link between Recolle and those other worlds. However, this has not been confirmed.

1st hand sources:

https://retrospec.dreamwidth.org/72728.html?thread=26263064#cmt26263064

"Retrospec has completed settling its roots and they are in the interview process to ensure that things will go according to plan to rebuild as they need to."

“… it wasn't so much a "reincarnation" as it was a "Reconstruction".”

One thing I think that's important to share from Team Daquiri is that Retrospec employees apparently have protocols in place that, in normal situations, prevent them from talking to us or really interacting with us in any way.

retrospec is also looking like a mostly family run business
joanne is janet's little sister
mahoney is joanne and janet's aunt
jim just married in, obligatory fuck jim
maurice is unrelated and apparently wendy's from a dead world
sorry if that's private info wendy but someone can't keep a secret
anyway they super monitor this thing so if we say fuck jim enough times maybe he'll come out of hiding
and this is the last time i'm using their proper names

"When people forget, their soul slips out of place. They become their own twist of unreality, and need to be rewritten a bit to not unbalance everything."

CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Balthier (or Ffamran mied Bunansa)
AGE: 23
CANON: Final Fantasy XII

CANON HISTORY: a link
CANON PERSONALITY: Balthier likes to pretend that his is a man of mystery, above the frays of normal society, and instead committed only to his partnership with Fran and their lives as daring sky pirates. This puts him firmly outside of the realm of the law, and makes him beholden to no one except her, which is how he prefers it. And while he might seem aloof, there's something to be said for his theatric flair. He calls himself the leading man, he wears elaborate, fancy (yet functional) clothing, with gold and hints of color. He chooses his words very carefully, designed to make the most immediate impact.

So, while he likes to pretend that he is aloof, and occasionally only motivated by the basest of desires, peel back at that initial presentation and it becomes obvious that he cares too much. Though he's abandoned his past as the pampered son of a respected engineer, a judge at 16, and well on his way to great things in Archadia, he can't entirely let it go. Though he gripes and pretends the opposite, that he can only be moved by valuable trinkets, Balthier knows that he can't leave the world in the hands of his madman father, a man who taught him everything he knows about airships and to whom he was close to before his descent into madness after the discovery of the deifacted nethecite.

Balthier wants no part in whatever scheme his father has cooked up, and it's the destruction of Nabudis that finally pushes him to flee the life that's been constructed for him. While he doesn't have the ability to face all of the Archadian government and his father head on, he can at least make it clear he wants no part in whatever the end result of this experiment is. While in this instance he runs away, Balthier is quick to take responsibility where he can for his actions. He agrees to rescue Penelo knowing she was captured because of a tenuous connection to him, knowing that if he'd just quit Rabanastre, he would have been free to carry on as he had.

It's as he gets closer to the true story of the nethecite that he offers sincere advice and counsel. His tendency, up to that point, was to shroud his knowledge in the context of "anyone should know this, if they have half their wits about them." In fact, until he gets close, he's more likely to use sarcasm and turn of phrase when speaking, as part of his act as the "leading man." Ironically, his constructed view of the leading man is far more stilted than his behavior after the fact.

In fact, he seems to grow more selfless as time goes on, leading to an act of "sacrifice" towards the end of the war between Archadia and Dalmasca, where he stays behind with Fran to stop the Bahamut from crashing onto the city of Rabanastre, and killing untold numbers. Though it seems like he will die (he was only able to slow and redirect the ship), he tells Princess Ashe that he can't die, "Because the leading man never dies."

On that note, his dedication to Fran is absolute. While it may seem that he is leading the adventures of the pair, were Fran to share any misgivings about their adventures, he'd fly off on the nearest airship with her. He truly believes that Fran saved him from a life of misery, where he would have ended up trading his conscience for power, just as his father had done. She gave him the strength and reason to run away from that life. So, regardless of his feelings elsewhere (and you could argue that he comes to sincerely love Ashe), he will always follow Fran, and he will never go back to his life as Ffamran mied Bunansa, even after the death of his father, and the destruction of the corrupted system he left.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:

AS A NOTE: After thinking about this, I am eschewing the old game's model of "anyone can learn anything" and going with the system in Zodiac Age. So, Balthier starts out with guns as a default, no one ever really keeps him as a marksman. I'm using my classes in my playthrough of Zodiac Age: Monk and Black Mage.

The monk class emphasizes strength, and using your body as a weapon. Its primary weapon is the pole, but it includes several enhancements, should you choose to fight with no weapon. This class is not magic based, and instead relies on technicks to cover the differences (say... if you need a ranged attack for a flying monster, then you could use the 1,000 Needles technick, or if you want to pretend you're a black mage, the Shades of Black technick, which allows you to use a random black magick spell). A full list of the technicks that he can learn is here.

The Black Mage class, however, is the traditional class. Its primary weapon is the mace, but Balthier would use poles instead. This class allows him to work all of the powerful black magicks that are typical to a Final Fantasy. Fire, Fira, Firaga, etc. These magics follow the traditional pattern: Fire, Water, Aero, Quake. There are also Bio and Dark. A full list of black magic in FF12 is available, so that should be the comprehensive list for what he can learn in game.

In addition:
Marksmanship - Balthier is a skilled marksman. That is his preferred weapon

Quickenings - Balthier has three of these extremely powerful moves: Fires of War, Tides of Fate, and Elements of Treachery. I've listed them from weakest to most powerful, but if these are chained with other quickenings, it has the ability to trigger a mist reaction of an even more powerful magic.

Summons - Balthier has Belias and Famfrit as Espers available to him. Belias was his reward for helping Ashe out, and Famfrit used to belong to his father.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Franklin M. Brewer
AU AGE: 24
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: No differences.

AU HISTORY: Franklin lived a charmed life in London. His father was a high ranking government official within the NHS. His public service often allowed Franklin's family a life of relaxation. In fact, as Franklin got older, his father encouraged him to travel across Europe, and so he did a couple of study abroad trips. He used his proximity to France to learn French, and after that German, leaving him conversational in both, and conveniently able to travel basically the entire continent without worrying about language barriers.

Given his aptitude and how he was a serious student (as the youngest, his father tended to dote on him, much to the chagrin of his brothers), he was able to gain entry into Oxford relatively early. His travels had given him an early interest in investigative reporting, and so he started on that track. It was soon after his 1st year in school that his charmed life started to fall apart at the seams.

While yes, he did the things normal college students did (such as experiment heavily with drink, sex, and drugs), when he went home he behaved well. At least, until he stumbled upon papers in his father's desk detailing a request to speed up the process for an experimental drug's approval. The document noted that the American process had already been fast tracked, and he should have FDA approval memos on his desk before the week was over.

Enclosed was an account number, and a monetary value. His father had, at some point, realized the power of his office, and had decided to take advantage of it. Franklin obviously knew that the American process was batshit. And so, he did what any aspiring journalist would do. He took pictures, he documented. He sat close enough to catch snippets of his father's conversations. He wanted his proof to be absolute.

He continued on this way, growing more distant from his family, and more pulled into his journalist career. He even went to America, to Recollé, for a study abroad (where he was able to have a couple of flings with some of the law enforcement there...) to do more in-depth research. Finally, in his senior year, he sent his article to the newspaper he worked for, the Independent, accepted a job offer, and was on his way to Africa to report in Somalia before the article had published.

He hasn't spoken to his family in years, though he knows that his father had to resign in disgrace. Meanwhile, he's charted the globe, working on hard hitting pieces in war-torn parts of the world, and covering stories of corruption in the less war-torn parts. He's seen as a rising star, though his supervisor is concerned he'll burn himself out before long. In a last ditch effort to get him to slow down, they send him to Recollé to follow up with reports about government corruption.

That's why he's here now.
AU PERSONALITY: While he wouldn't describe himself as such, Franklin is much more obviously an idealist than his canon counterpart. While Balthier has plenty of swagger and confidence, his belief in a better society is primarily driven by those around him and his own sense of responsibility. Meanwhile, Franklin views his journalism as a way to root out the worst excesses that had given him such a charmed life. He's seen the worst in people, but he believes that if he tells the story well enough, it will compel others to act where he can't.

Like his canon counterpart, Franklin loves to travel, and has been to every continent except Antarctica. He views it as necessary, and tends to get antsy and travel starved if he stays in one place for too long. Without a bounty on his head, he's free to immerse himself in the cultures he visits, though he's cognizant that it's sometimes dangerous to be a journalist abroad. But it's nothing he's ever feared explicitly.

Besides that, without a Fran as a grounding force for him, Franklin is much more leery of becoming closely involved with anyone. While he does have a bit of a hedonistic view of life, he will abandon any partners long before it could be said to be "serious." And he communicates that up front as much as possible (in his mind, and to varying degrees of success). Besides that, because he doesn't have an archetype he molds himself into, he can get distracted occasionally from goal to goal. Is he traveling for pleasure? Oh, but he discovered a new lead, so perhaps it's time to work. Ah, here's another lead. ETC, he's quite literally a workaholic. This lingers in the back of his mind in every single conversation.

Finally, while Balthier chooses his words for a theatric flourish, Franklin is likely to choose his words in a way suiting of a sensible Londoner. His humor is dry, and self depreciating in a way that Balthier would never, ever allow. But Franklin isn't above a bit of self-depreciation, or a recounting of mistakes he's made. But just because he'll do it doesn't mean he won't follow with taking the piss out on everything else around him. He's bad, but others are worse, you know.
